When it was first established in 1949, the former name of CUFE was the Central school of Taxation. Later, it went through several stages of development, from the Central Institute of Finance, the Central Institute of Finance and Economics, to the Central Financial and Monetary Institute. In 1996, the Institute was officially renamed as the Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in the honor of the Ministry of Education. CUFE upholds "loyalty, unity, truth-seeking, innovation" as its motto, adhering to the "truth seeking, excellence pursuit", which is the philosophy of the university. Over eight thousand high caliber graduates have graduated from CUFE all these years, therefore CUFE is known as "the cradle of China's Finance and Management Specialists" and "the Whampoa of China's Finance and Economics Academies."
Based upon economics and management, i.e. the two main subjects which have traditional advantages, CUFE has formed a disciplines system of interdisciplinary integration, which coordinates the development of law, literature, science, engineering and many other subjects. CUFE has 38 undergraduate majors, with independent autonomy of undergraduate degree settings of the subjects in economics and management, and seven national distinctive majors such as Finance, Accounting, Insurance, Statistics, etc. Applied economics is the first class national key academic discipline and Accounting is the second class national key academic discipline. CUFE also has first class national key academic disciplines such as business management, political economy, and economic information management. It is authorized by 17 doctoral degrees and 42 master's degrees autonomy as well as the 4 kinds of professional master’s degree, viz. Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Public Accounting (MPAcc), and Juris Master (J.M). CUFE has three postdoctoral research stations. They are Applied Economics, Theoretical Economics, and Business Management. Moreover, CUFE has a key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education – China’s Actuarial Research Institute, and the first batch of philosophy and social scientific research base in Beijing, also known as the Beijing Financial Research Center.
According to the development trend of higher education at home and abroad and China's socio-economic development needs, combined with the advantages of its own development, and through scientific proof, CUFE clearly establishes the university's overall strategic objective: to build a distinctive, multidisciplinary, international research university. The overall strategic objective will be achieved in three steps. Firstly, from 2005 to 2010, the university in general will maintain itself at an advanced level in China, to lay a sound and solid foundation of changing itself from a teaching and research university into a research university. The second step, from 2010 to 2020, is to build a research university with distinctive characteristics in Finance and Economics. The third step, up until the middle of this century, while the university celebrates its centenary anniversary, CUFE will achieve itself as an internationally renowned, multidisciplinary, high-level research university with distinct characteristics.
