Abstract:

Although cross-border collaboration within multinational corporations (MNCs) poses managerial challenges, it can substantially promote knowledge creation. This study examines the relationship between concentrating cross-border co-invention ties on one or a few inventors in a host country and local knowledge creation. Using data on U.S. pharmaceutical MNCs from 1980 to 2008 at the MNC-country-year level, the analysis supports the study's hypotheses.
